Premier League Preview | Burnley
Burnley are a club that are truly to be admired – and an aspirational story that should give hope to all clubs out there in the football league ladder. They are from an unglamorous city, they have a manager that could be used as the poster boy for the phrase ‘down-to-earth’, they rarely spend money, they have a bunch of English players as their core and they have no real superstars playing for them. In spite of all of this (and equally possibly because of it) they have become something of a fixture in the Premier League. Now in their fourth season they don’t feel like a club you automatically earmark for a relegation battle – you feel that they are heading towards territory where the main concern for fans going in is where the excitement in the season will come from.
In Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood they have two strikers that will cause nightmares for centre backs every week, while Gudmundsson and Defour provide an element of flair that is often underappreciated. An emerging talent last season – Dwight McNeil will likely have another season of growth and is a genuinely exciting prospect (albeit with the caveat for Burnley fans that if he does continue to impress it likely puts an expiration date on his time at Burnley).
Burney – keep doing what you’re doing – I see another season of consolidation and quiet steady progress towards Premier League mediocrity.
