While Manchester City obviously have a lot to live up to after last year, it feels like there is an even greater burden of expectation on Liverpool for this upcoming season. While the lack of any serious action in the transfer window is probably attempting to send a “Same again lads” message to the team, it could equally be read as an indicator that the club feel they couldn’t do anything more than they did last season – so why try to do so.

The biggest problems that Liverpool face are one internal and one external. The internal is that it is difficult to see where the improvement might come over last year, or even if last year’s level could be maintained. Liverpool did get extremely lucky with injuries last year – with none of their real key players being out for any kind of extended period, and in TAN (Trent Alexander-Arnold), Robertson and a few others, it felt like they performed to the peak of their abilities and could do no better.

If you were to try and pick some key areas internally, it is possible that their two wing backs who contributed so much to the successes were just stepping up their game, and could do so again – I for one am a massive fan for TAN and believe he could do so. The other player who could step up from last year is Salah, who’s finishing goal tally somewhat obscures a season where he did not take games by the scruff of the neck the way he had done in the previous campaign.

That external factor? Man City – I feel they might be even better this year.
