Premier League Preview | Tottenham Hotspur
And so we come to another make-or-break season for Tottenham, when once again their world will fall apart if they don’t get a trophy. Of course I have a little of a tongue in my cheek here, but not the whole thing. Although he had an incredibly disappointing season last year, Trippier leaving felt like the first of the rats leaving sinking ship. Now I accept that is an overly dramatic metaphor, but this does feel like the season that could be the end of the Poch era at Spurs.
Eriksen, Vertonghen and Alderweireld all feel like they may be coming to the end of their times, and another disappointing season of Dele might see his unrealised talents acknowledged and see him be shipped elsewhere for a fresh start.
Poch himself continues to make noises that suggest he might be ready to finally call time on his weirdly close, yet weirdly fractious relationship with Daniel Levy. It has even got to the point now where an long-awaited Premiership title feels like it would be the culmination of this time there rather than the beginning of a dynasty.
But I’m sure there are many, many clubs around Europe that would like to be in the position Spurs are – in Kane, Son and Moura they have 3 genuinely world-class players, while Winks, Walker-Peters and now Sessegnon provide some immediate class and even greater promise for both club and country.
The other signings of Lo Celso and Ndombele should provide an extra dimension of genuine depth in the squad that might see them not struggle in the closing stages as they did last year.
While I wish I could tell Spurs fans that their wishes will finally be realised, I think it will likely be another season of admirable application, beautiful football but ultimate disappointment.
